Signal will soon introduce another new handy feature: labels for groups. The feature is currently in development and will be available on all platforms: Android, iOS, and Desktop.
With labels, you can give a short description about yourself in a group that is visible to all current and future group members. This is especially useful in larger groups where not everyone knows each other personally, such as a neighborhood group, a work group with colleagues from different departments, or a sports club chat. Administrators can use labels to indicate their own role and responsibilities within the group.
The first hints of member labels can now be found in the Signal source code for iOS (Github Commits 1d73b0d, 212cefb, 3b6d3f5 et 2f79c01).
Labels can start with an emoji, just like the ‘About’ description in your profile. As with everything in Signal, labels will be end-to-end encrypted.
We contacted Signal, and a spokesperson confirmed that the new feature is being developed for all platforms: iOS, Android and Desktop. As usual, Signal could not say when the new group feature will be available: “Soon”.
Signal greatly improved and more to come
Signal has rolled out many new features recently, including Signal Secure Backups and polls, as highlighted in our 2025 Signal recap.
This year, Signal continues to develop at full speed. Android has received a redesigned interface for calls, and this week, pinned messages were introduced to beta. Both features had already been announced in our Signal 2026 preview.
Also coming soon are support for Android tablets, key transparency, and the ability to mute other participants in group calls.
