Signal has released a new beta version for Android: 7.44. What’s new in this update?
The latest version of Signal for Android includes various bug fixes and other technical improvements. Most of the work is behind the scenes, including improved network performance.
The developers have mainly focused on Signal Backups. The feature is now quite advanced, but given the amount of improvements the developers make weekly, it may still take some time before it becomes available. The feature is currently being tested internally.
As it stands, there will be a free backup option for everyone and a paid backup subscription with more extensive backup capabilities. According to the Signal source code, the free version will include all text messages along with media from the past 45 days. A paid version will include all your shared media. However, since the feature is still in development, this may be subject to change.
Signal is a non-profit organization that mainly operates on donations from users. With a paid backup version, the costs of cloud storage can be covered, and users support Signal’s mission. Read more on the official Signal blog about the costs of building Signal and Signal’s non-profit mission.
