Signal has started beta testing Signal backups for iOS. This brings the much-requested Signal backups one step closer to release for iPhone.
Signal announced the secure backups two weeks ago in a detailed blog post. In the meantime, Signal Secure Backups have rolled out to Android, and now it’s iOS’s turn.
In Signal beta version 7.79 for iOS, testers via TestFlight can enable Signal backups via Settings > Backups.
It is not yet known when the backups will become available to everyone. This depends in part on whether many unexpected issues are discovered during this testing phase.

Signal backups with beta label
In the Signal app, the new Backups feature has a small “Beta” label. This is intentional, as there are still edge cases that need further testing and the backup feature will be improved over time.
Free and paid versions of Signal backups
As already announced, there will be both a free and a paid version of Signal backups. Both options include all your text messages, but the free version only includes recent media. Storage is expensive, and since Signal doesn’t earn money from ads or selling user data, the service charges $1,99 per month for the extended media backup to keep it sustainable.
