Signal releases new beta version for Android: 7.59. What’s new in this update?
In the latest version of Signal for Android, the developers have further improved the recently launched Signal Secure Backups. Several design tweaks and technical improvements for backups have been made.
Polls coming soon
The biggest news is that the new Polls feature for Android is nearly complete and currently undergoing internal testing. With a major commit on GitHub, the feature was added to the Android app all at once. On iOS and Desktop we’ve already been seeing signs of polls in Signal since August.
It’s not surprising that the poll feature will be rolled out across platforms simultaneously: if only the iPhone users in a group can vote, a poll isn’t very useful.
Just a few days ago we shared the first screenshots of polls in Signal for iOS, and the Android version looks almost identical.
Poll notifications in Signal
A new detail in the Android version is that Polls will have their own setting in Sounds & Notifications. This lets you decide whether or not to receive poll notifications when you’ve muted a group. This is useful if you don’t want to be flooded with notifications from a busy group, but still don’t want to miss important votes.
It’s still unclear exactly when the Polls feature will be released. Based on current progress, we expect it to arrive in Signal later this month. We’ll keep you posted on our site and social channels as soon as more news becomes available.
