Signal Android update: key transparency in the works

Jan 15, 2026

Signal has a new beta version for Android: 7.70. What’s new in this update?

The latest version of Signal for Android includes various bug fixes and other technical improvements. Among other things, the new user interface for calls has been further enhanced.

Key transparency

One of the GitHub commits (5759609) reveals that Signal continues to work on “Key transparency”. This will allow the app to automatically verify whether end-to-end encryption of conversations is intact and hasn’t been altered unnoticed.

At the moment, users can only check the security of the connection manually by scanning a QR code or comparing the safety numbers via Chat Settings > View Safety Number.

Key transparency will make this process automatic in the future. The feature has been in development for a long time, and this update includes an education sheet for users, indicating that its introduction is approaching. As soon as there’s more news, you’ll of course read it on our website and social media channels.

Other improvements

One of the other improvements is that the chat list now refreshes immediately when you have it open and the timer of a disappearing message runs out. Previously, you had to open a chat or restart the app to refresh the chat list.

Signal has also improved accessibility for the screen where you can change your phone number. Users with larger font sizes or different zoom levels can now scroll in this screen.

Even the smallest details matter: the logo in the QR code for sharing your username has now been updated to the latest Signal logo, which was introduced in November 2024.

By the way, do you still remember that the Signal logo and app looked much different back in 2016?
