Soon it will be possible to send photos and videos from Signal Desktop that the recipient(s) can view only once. This is revealed in the source code of Signal Desktop (Github commit c36c329).
Currently, view-once media can only be sent from an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad. Signal Desktop only allows you to receive these types of photos and videos, but that’s about to change.
Photos and videos set for view-once are automatically deleted after the recipient(s) have seen them. You also cannot view these sent photos and videos in the chat yourself.
Keep in mind: while these photos and videos are deleted automatically, recipients could still take screenshots or record them with another device. This means they could potentially view the media indefinitely or share it with others. Therefore, only share photos and videos with people you trust.
It is not yet known when sending view-once media will be available in Signal Desktop. As soon as there is more news, you will of course find it on our website and social media accounts.
