Can I make calls or video calls via Signal?

Yes. With Signal, you can make private voice and video calls, both in one-on-one chats and groups.

To place voice and video calls, Signal first needs access to your phone’s microphone and camera. You can enable these permissions in your phone settings. Signal will also prompt you to grant access when you make or receive your first voice or video call.

You can start a new voice or video call in two ways: from a chat or via the Calls tab.

Calling or video calling from a chat

If you want to start a call from an existing chat or group, first open that conversation. You can also start a new chat by tapping the pencil icon in the bottom right corner of Signal, and search for a contact or phone number.

Once in the chat, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the phone icon to start a voice call or the camera icon for a video call.
  2. Tap “Start call.”
  3. During the call, you can tap the camera icon to turn your camera on or off.
  4. The call screen shows the call status:
    – Connecting: waiting for your contact to connect
    – Ringing: the phone is ringing for the other person
    – Signal + timer: the call has been answered

Calling or video calling from the Calls tab

You can also start new calls from the Calls tab.

If you have previously called or video-called someone on Signal, you will see this in the call list. You can tap the phone or camera icon next to a contact to call or video call them again directly.

To start a new call, tap the call button (phone with a plus sign) in the bottom right corner. Then scroll through your contacts or search by name, username or phone number. Start a voice or video call by tapping the phone or camera icon.
