Signal is working behind the scenes to expand moderation tools for group admins. In the future, admins will be able to delete messages from other group members for everyone.
This can be seen in recent changes to Signal’s source code (GitHub commit 12d487f), which add support in backups for messages deleted by group admins.
Until now, group admins, like other members, can only delete their own messages in groups. When other members post inappropriate messages, admins cannot take action, and the messages remain visible to the group
In the updated code, Signal introduces a new message type that records when an admin has intervened in a group. This does not involve editing or deleting one’s own message, but rather a separate system message that can appear only in group chats and cannot be modified.
This indicates that group admins will be able to delete messages sent by other members in the future. Other group members will then see a message indicating that the item was deleted by an admin.
Signal has not yet confirmed the new feature and it’s still unknown when it will become available. The feature is still in an early stage of development, so it may take some time before users can actually use it. As soon as there is more news, you will find it on our website and social media channels.
