Signal will soon automatically delete call events in disappearing chats

5 Juni 2026 09:59 CEST

Signal is working on improving the way chats with disappearing messages function. Currently, in chats with disappearing messages enabled, only messages, voice messages, media, and other attachments disappear. In the future, call events will also be deleted automatically.

When you enable disappearing messages in Signal, messages are automatically deleted after they have been viewed and the set timer has expired. This helps keep your chat history short. Since automatic deletion currently does not apply to other events, such as calls, profile name changes, members joining or leaving a group, and settings changes, chats can eventually become filled with old events only. While you can delete these manually, it is more convenient if these events disappear automatically as well.

The first signs of improvements in this area can now be found in Signal’s source code (GitHub commit be80619). This indicates that answered and declined 1:1 calls will also become part of the disappearing messages system. Based on the current code, missed calls will not disappear automatically.

It’s not yet known if this is the first step toward making more things disappear, but of course that would be a logical next step.

Cleaner chats and groups

Signal has recently made event notifications more organized by merging and grouping them together. Multiple call events, chat updates, group updates and disappearing message timer changes are now collapsed into a single notification per type. The upcoming improvements for call events in chats with disappearing messages will make chats cleaner and further reduce notification clutter.

It’s not yet known when the changes to chats with disappearing messages will be available. Once features are officially released, Signal aims to make them available across all platforms. As soon as there is more news, you will find it on our website and social media.
