Signal is working behind the scenes to increase the number of chats you can pin. Currently, you can pin up to four chats.
This comes from the source code of Signal for Android (GitHub commit f90ba45). The developers have made the pinned chat limit remotely configurable. Thanks to this technical change, the limit can be increased in the future via server configuration at Signal, without requiring an app update.
Previously, the maximum number of chats you could pin was ‘hard-coded’ in the app.
Pinning chats keeps important conversations at the top of your chat list in Signal. Other active chats appear below your pinned chat(s).
It is not yet known what the new limit will be or when it will become available. As soon as there is more news, you can read it on our website and social media channels.
WhatsApp: fewer pinned chats, pay to unlock more
Notably, WhatsApp has been working on increasing the limit for pinned chats since early 2024. Currently, WhatsApp allows you to pin three chats, one less than Signal.
Raising such a limit would normally not take two years for a large commercial company like WhatsApp (Meta). It recently became clear why it is taking so long: WhatsApp wants to make this feature part of a paid version of the app.
This paid subscription is separate from the upcoming paid WhatsApp subscription for the ‘Updates’ tab. Users who don’t want to pay will likely start seeing Werbung in WhatsApp warten möchtest soon.
All in all, it is clear that WhatsApp is increasingly focused on maximizing revenue from its users. In doing so, it is also breaking some of Meta’s earlier promises made after acquiring WhatsApp.
Signal, on the other hand, is developed by an independent non-profit organization and is not designed to maximize profit or collect as much data about you as possible.
