Signal has increased the maximum length of in-app video recordings. Users can now record longer videos, with the exact limit depending on their device.
Until now, users were limited to one minute per recording on Android, while recordings on iOS were limited to 100 MB in size.
For Android, the 60-second cap has been removed in GitHub commit 607115b, which is included in Signal for Android version 8.26.
This commit added support for writing in-app videos to disk in encrypted form, which was the biggest change needed to increase the limit on Android. Previously, videos had to be transcoded entirely in native memory to avoid writing unencrypted video data to disk, which required Signal to impose a time limit.
For iPhone, no changes to the iOS app itself were needed to support longer video recordings. Instead, the increase was enabled by a recent server-side change that raised Signal’s maximum attachment size from 100 MB to 200 MB.
The new maximum recording length varies by device, even within the same operating system. In our test, it was 5 minutes on an Android phone, while on an iPhone we were able to record for more than 15 minutes.
The increased video recording limit gives Signal users more freedom to securely record and share longer videos directly from the app.
