Good news for Linux users: Signal has announced that Signal Desktop will soon be officially released as an AppImage. This will make the popular chat app accessible on all Linux distributions, not just Debian-based systems.
The first beta version is now available, and the developers are inviting the Signal Community to help test it. Testing the Signal Desktop Linux AppImage is welcome on any Linux distribution, even on already supported Debian-based systems such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint. On some systems, FUSE must be installed beforehand.
The AppImage stores data separately in ~/.config/Signal Beta AppImage/. This means the AppImage can run alongside the existing Linux Deb version without affecting each other’s data. Although it is possible to migrate data, Signal recommends setting up the AppImage version as a new linked device to avoid potential conflicts.
Currently, only x86_64 is supported, but Signal plans to expand this in the future. Detailed instructions for the Signal Desktop Linux AppImage can be found on the community forum. It is not yet known when it will be available for everyone.
With the Linux expansion, Signal is making the app more widely accessible, and there’s more to come. Support for Android tablets will follow soon.
