Signal Desktop update: GPU acceleration on Linux for smoother videos

Jun 20, 2025

Signal Desktop has a new beta version: 7.59. What’s new in this update?

The latest version of Signal Desktop includes various bug fixes and other technical improvements.

For Linux users, this update enables GPU acceleration for improved performance and smoother video playback on supported hardware. For those using Linux with Wayland, a bug that caused the main screen not showing has also been fixed.

The Settings screen has been improved for narrow windows, and developers have been working behind the scenes on Signal backups and local backups.

A small new thing is that you’ll soon be able to donate to Signal directly from Signal Desktop, as revealed by a commit. Signal is developed by the non-profit Signal Foundation and will not—and never will—include ads in the app like WhatsApp. However, developing, maintaining, and running Signal does cost money. Signal’s main source of income is user donations. You can already donate via the mobile app via Signal Settings > Donate to Signal and on the Signal website, and soon Signal Desktop will be added to that list.
