Signal Desktop update: improved call quality and chat folders in development

Jul 3, 2025

Signal Desktop has a new beta version: 7.61. What’s new in this update?

In this latest version of Signal Desktop, various bug fixes and other technical improvements have been made.

Improvements in video and voice calls

The sound quality and reliability during video and voice calls in Signal Desktop have been improved. Additionally, the automatic configuration of connected microphones and speakers has been further optimized. Signal collaborated with three Mozilla developers on this and thanked them on the Community Forum for their help.

Chat folders

Furthermore, a commit on GitHub reveals that Signal Desktop will soon support chat folders. With chat folders in Signal, you can organize your chats entirely according to your preferences. You can categorize by chat type (1:1 chats or groups) or fully personalize the structure—for example, creating a separate folder for friends and family and one for colleagues. Chat folders allow you to find your important chats with a single click.

Users of Signal for Android have been able to use chat folders since the end of last year. It was already known that other platforms would follow. Chat folders in Signal Desktop are now in active development, and as soon as they become available, you’ll read about it on our website.

Donations via Signal Desktop

This version of Signal Desktop also includes further development of the donation feature we wrote about last week. Among other things, improvements have been made regarding donation receipts. Signal is a non-profit organization and relies mainly on donations from users.

Signal backups

Finally, work has continued on Signal backups. Soon, you’ll be able to create backups of your chats in Signal Desktop—either on a secure storage service provided by Signal or locally on your own computer.
