Signal Desktop has a new beta version: 7.58. What’s new in this update?
The latest version of Signal Desktop includes various bug fixes and technical improvements.
Improved emoji reactions
A new feature in this release is that Signal Desktop now displays existing emoji reactions at the top of the emoji picker. This makes it easier to quickly react with the same emoji others have already used. You’ll find these reactions under “This Message”:
Resizable sidebar in Settings
Another improvement is that you can now adjust the width of the sidebar in the Settings menu. Simply click on the edge with your mouse and drag the panel left or right. This is especially useful for users with smaller screens.
Local backups in development for Desktop
The biggest news in this update is that Signal is working on local backups for the Desktop app. It was already known that cloud backups are in development, but according to the latest source code, local backups are coming too.
Local backups will be stored end-to-end encrypted on your computer. You’ll be able to choose the folder where you want Signal Desktop to save your backups. These backups will be secured with a 64-character backup key that only you know.
This new backup feature is expected to launch alongside Signal’s cloud backups. However, there’s no official release date yet.
