Signal has launched version 8.0 for all platforms: Android, iOS, and Signal Desktop. In this version, end-to-end encrypted Signal Secure Backups are no longer a beta feature but officially available to all users.

The secure backups were announced by Signal on September 8, 2025 via a blog post and have been extensively tested by beta users over the past few months. With version 8.0, Signal Secure Backups are now being rolled out widely.

Signal Secure Backups are automatic end-to-end encrypted backups hosted by Signal. This allows you to easily restore your messages and media when switching to a new phone, reinstalling the app, or in case of loss, damage, or theft of your device.

With Signal Secure Backups, you can store all your text messages plus media from the past 45 days for free. Users who want to backup older attachments can opt for a paid subscription with 100 GB of storage.

Signal is a non-profit organization that builds the app solely in the interest of its users, not to collect data or show ads. Offering additional storage space, however, incurs extra costs. The extended backup subscription costs $ 1.99 per month.

Users can enable either the free or paid version of backups through the app settings under the “Backups” section.

Signal version 8.0 will be rolled out to everyone in the coming weeks. Want to know more about Signal Secure Backups? Read our detailed article here.
