How to install Signal?

Signal can be installed on Android, iOS, and desktop devices. Download the Signal app on your smartphone or desktop and follow the installation steps for your device.

Here are the steps in brief:

Android

  1. Make sure your phone has Android 6.0 or newer. This article explains how to check your Android version number.
  2. Download and install Signal via the Google Play Store.
  3. Open Signal and follow the on-screen instructions to complete your registration.

iOS (iPhone/iPod)

  1. Make sure your device has iOS 15.0 or newer. This article explains how to check your iOS version number.
  2. Download and install Signal via Apple’s App Store.
  3. Open Signal and follow the on-screen instructions to complete your registration.

iPadOS (iPad linked to a phone)

  1. Make sure your device has iPadOS 15.0 or newer. This article explains how to check your iOS version number.
  2. Download and install Signal via Apple’s App Store.
  3. Open Signal and follow the on-screen instructions to link your iPad to your phone.

iPadOS (iPad as a standalone device)

  1. Make sure your device has iPadOS 15.0 or newer. This article explains how to check your iOS version number.
  2. Make sure you can receive SMS messages (not iMessages) or phone calls on this number.
  3. Download and install Signal via Apple’s App Store.
  4. Select the unlink icon  in the top-right corner.
  5. Open Signal and follow the on-screen instructions to complete your registration.

Windows (Desktop)

  1. Make sure Signal is installed and working on your Android phone or iPhone.
  2. Check whether your operating system is compatible with Signal Desktop. Signal works on Windows 10 and 11. This article explains how to check your Windows version
  3. Download the desktop app Signal for Windows.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Link Signal Desktop to your phone.

macOS (Desktop)

  1. Make sure Signal is installed and working on your Android phone or iPhone.
  2. Check whether your operating system is compatible with Signal Desktop. Signal works on macOS 12 (Monterey) and newer. This article explains how to check your macOS version.
  3. Download the desktop app Signal for macOS.
  4. Move Signal to the “Applications” directory. If you are not an administrator, search for ~/Apps using Spotlight and move the Signal installation file to that directory.
  5. Link Signal Desktop to your phone.

Linux (Desktop)

  1. Make sure Signal is installed and working on your Android phone or iPhone.
