Research: Dutch users are increasingly abandoning WhatsApp, shifting to Signal

18 August 2025 08:22 CEST

Dutch users are using WhatsApp less frequently. This emerges from research by Telecompaper, conducted among 1,600 consumers.

Daily WhatsApp usage shows a notable decline in the third quarter of 2025. In 2024, the number of people using WhatsApp every day was consistently around 95 percent, and now this has dropped to about 90 percent.

Telecompaper attributes this to the growth Signal has experienced this year. Signal now has over 2 million users in the Netherlands and a market reach of 14 percent. Users who switch to Signal often continue using WhatsApp for contacts and groups that are not yet on Signal. This is also one of the tips given for switching from WhatsApp to Signal.

As more Dutch users install Signal, WhatsApp usage may decline further. So if you don’t have Signal yet, join in and download Signal for free here!

Signal is far more privacy-friendly than WhatsApp

Signal is the privacy-focused alternative to WhatsApp from Meta. Unlike Signal, WhatsApp can see a lot about you: your profile picture, personal information, group names, and descriptions of your communities and groups.

WhatsApp is also adding more and more non-encrypted features to the app, such as channels and Meta AI, which cannot be disabled. With these kinds of features, Meta collects a large amount of data about you and your contacts. Experts and the Dutch Data Protection Authority have expressed strong criticism of Meta AI in WhatsApp.

Like many privacy experts, Meta AI also recommends Signal as the app to use for private messaging instead of WhatsApp. So if you don’t have Signal yet, just give the app a try.
