With Signal, you can make group calls, including both voice and video calls. Signal is a private and secure alternative to Teams and Zoom. This article explains how group calling works in an existing Signal group. If you want to start a group call without creating a group, you can use a call link instead.
Before you can start a group call, Signal needs permission to access your phone’s camera and microphone. You can grant these permissions through your device’s settings, or Signal will prompt you to allow access the first time you start or join a group voice or video call.
Keep the following in mind when using group calls:
- All participants must be using the latest version of Signal.
- All participants must be members of the same Signal group. If you don’t have a group, you can set up a group call via a call link.
- A group call can have up to 75 participants.
Calling or video calling from a group
- Open Signal and go to the group chat.
- Tap the Video call (camera) icon in the top right corner. You can turn off your camera before starting the call.
- Tap Start call (or Join call if a call is already in progress).
- Group members will receive a notification, and the ongoing call will also appear in the group chat. Optional: For small groups of up to 16 people, you can choose to send a ringing notification.
Group calling from the Calls tab
You can also start group calls from the Calls tab. If you have previously called a group on Signal, you will see this in the call list. You can tap the camera icon next to the group to call them again directly.
To start a new group call, tap the call button (phone with a plus sign) in the bottom right corner and search for the group name. Start a call by tapping the camera icon. You can turn off your camera before starting the call.
