Yes, optionally you can register for Signal without a phone number with Signal Login. After making a small one-time purchase, Signal provides you with an Account ID and Recovery Key. Optionally, you can set up a username. If you register without a phone number and don’t create a username, other users won’t be able to find or contact you on Signal.
Until September 2026, Signal required a phone number to create and verify an account but this has changed with the launch of Signal Login (see: Why does Signal need a phone number to register? And what changes with Signal Login?).
The main registration method is still to use a phone number. The number must be able to receive an SMS or phone call. Signal can also be registered using a landline phone. If you cannot receive SMS messages on this number, you can choose the “Call me” option during the registration process. You will then receive a spoken verification code, which allows you to register Signal using your landline number.
Although a phone number is still required for the standard registration method, Signal hides your phone number from others by default. You can connect with others using usernames instead of sharing your number. Once set up, you can also use Signal on linked devices without actively using your number.
Note: Signal can only be registered with one Account ID or one phone number per device, and each account ID or phone number can only be used on one mobile phone at a time. Dual SIM is not supported.
