Exporting Signal chats in JSON format now available on all platforms

23 Ottobre 2026 15:20 CEST

With the addition of chat exports to Signal’s iOS app, Signal chats can now be exported in machine-readable JSON format on all platforms. Chat exports are not backups, and are only useful for certain users.

Exporting chats allows you to store and review conversations outside the app. Because the export is saved unencrypted on your device, other apps can access them depending on your device’s permissions. For this reason, store exported files securely and never share them with others.

The export includes all your chats; exporting individual conversations is currently not supported. The feature can be found under Settings > Chats > Export chat history. Before exporting, you must authenticate using your device lock. Signal then displays a warning explaining that the chat history will be saved on your device, where other apps may be able to access it, and that you should never share the exported file.

You can choose to export chats with or without media. Disappearing messages are not included.

Chat exports are not backups: use Signal Secure Backups instead

It’s important to note that chat exports are not a backup feature and not a replacement for backups. You cannot import chats into Signal from a JSON file.

If you want to back up your chat history, you can use Backup sicuri di Signal, or on-device backups. Signal Secure Backups can help you restore your chats if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, without relying on a backup stored on that device. If you don’t have backups enabled in Signal, go to Settings > Backups to enable them and keep your chat history safe.

Disponibilità

Chat exports are available in Signal for iOS version 8.35 and have been available on Android and Desktop since earlier this year.
