Signal is working on support for linking multiple phones to a single account

Signal is working on changes that will allow users to set up phones as linked devices.

This could be useful for people who use multiple phones, such as a personal and a work phone, while keeping the same Signal account and synchronized chat history across devices.

The first indications of support for phones as linked devices can be found in the source code of Signal for Android (GitHub commit 512df1e). The updated code implements the registration flow for linking a phone to an existing account instead of registering it with a new phone number.

The feature has not been officially announced and it’s still a work in progress. It’s not yet known when the changes will become available.

Linked Android tablets and expanded device support

Currently, users can only link Signal Desktop (PC, laptop) or iPad to their phone, or link Signal Desktop to their iPad when an iPad is set up as a standalone device.

Signal is working on support for linked Android tablets, which is expected to arrive soon. This will allow users to use an Android tablet as a linked device for their Signal account.

In the longer term, a standalone version of Signal Desktop is also in development, which will allow users to use Signal Desktop without requiring a smartphone as the primary device. Future support for phones as linked devices will also allow Signal Desktop to function as a primary device.

With all the above in development, Signal is moving toward broader multi-device support across more types of devices. These developments will make Signal more flexible for users with multiple devices and different use cases.
